Restylane® and Juvederm™, also known as dermal fillers, are
safe and natural injectable gels that are used to fill in moderate
to deep wrinkles and folds in the face, and to restore volume to
lips. The most common places to inject Restylane and Juvederm for
wrinkle correction are the nasolabial folds (the lines from the
corners of your nose to the corners of your mouth), and the marionette
lines (from the corners of your mouth down to your chin), but they
can be used on wrinkles in other areas of the face as well.
Restylane
and Juvederm are both made from hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring
substance in the skin like collagen and elastin that helps add
volume and hydration. With time, and exposure to sun and other
elements, our skin breaks down and loses structure and volume.
Restylane and Juvederm help restore that structure and volume to
create a natural look and feel.
FAQs
What is the difference between Restylane and Juvederm?
Both are
made of hyaluronic acid, but Juvederm has larger particles that
break down more slowly. They are manufactured by two different
companies. Restylane has been safely used by physicians since
1996 while Juvederm was introduced in 2007.
How
long do Restylane and Juvederm last?
Restylane lasts six months,
or even longer in some cases. Juvederm lasts six to nine months.
Because correction is temporary, most patients receive touch-up
injections once or twice a year to maintain their optimum appearance.
Are
Restylane and Juvederm safe?
Yes, both are safe if administered
by a trained professional. And both products are made from hyaluronic
acid, a naturally occurring substance in skin. The most commonly
reported side effects are temporary redness and swelling at the
injection site. These effects typically resolve within two to
three days.
What
do I have to do before treatment?
Restylane and Juvederm require
no pretesting, but you should take a few precautions before being
treated. You should avoid taking aspirin, NSAIDs (like Motrin
or Advil), St. John’s wort, or high doses of Vitamin E supplements
for 3-4 days before the treatment because these may increase the
chances of bruising or bleeding at the injection site.
What
should I expect after the treatment?
We will apply an ice pack
to the injection site immediately following the treatment to
minimize swelling. Any swelling or redness you may experience
should resolve itself within two to three days. You will not
require any recovery time after the procedure and may resume
your normal activities immediately.
How
quickly do Restylane and Juvederm take effect?
Immediately. You
will see the improvement while the Restylane or Juvederm is being
injected. The filler may take several weeks to totally settle
and for the first week or so you may notice some irregular clumping.
Do
the injections hurt?
Both Restylane and Juvederm are injected
directly into the skin in tiny amounts using an ultrafine needle.
The result is only minor discomfort. A topical anesthetic is
also normally applied prior to treatment. Most patients agree
that the beneficial effects of the treatments far outweigh the
minor discomfort during the injection.
How
much do Restylane and Juvederm cost?
The cost will vary from
patient to patient depending on how many sites are treated and
how much filler is used. A price can be established when you
call the Laser Center at 818-247-2170.
How
are Restylane and Juvederm different from Botox?
Restylane and
Juvederm are gels that are injected under the skin to fill facial
wrinkles and folds. Botox is a drug that blocks, or paralyzes,
muscles in the face to temporarily minimize or erase wrinkles.
Botox is typically used for the glabella (the frown lines between
the eyebrows), for crow’s feet, and to
decrease horizontal lines on the forehead.
Is
everyone a candidate for Restylane and Juvederm?
Both Restylane
and Juvederm are appropriate for men and women over age 18.
